THE IDEA

Africa today has the second highest gross domestic product (GDP) growth rate in the world

The Continent possesses many strengths, such as: a young and entrepreneurial population, territories that are rapidly transforming with growing regions and rapid urbanization, considerable natural resources, booming economies, rich ecosystems, and a great social dynamism with a new middle class that is emerging and seeing its spending power increase.

The same characteristics are seen in the other non-European countries involved in the World 014 – focus Africa project.

The Development Dynamics of Africa, is the first report of its kind by the African Union Commission, at the initiative of the respective Department of Economic Affairs. Conceived and expanded by African experts, with the support of the OECD, this report proposes ten central actions to drive development strategies, focusing on: sustainable economic development, by stimulating domestic investment, diversifying exports, intensifying urban-rural linkages and promoting green growth; inclusive social development, through education aligned with labor market needs and effective and universal social protection; and more robust institutions, through true regional integration, improved domestic resource mobilization and continued improvement in political and economic governance.

The starting figure is the percentage of the population 0-14 years old in African countries with high development rates, compared to the European benchmark, as the following table reveals:
